Catalyst Community Developments Society is a not-for-profit real estate developer, owner, and manager/operator with over 1,100 affordable rental homes currently in operation, and over 450 additional homes currently in various stages of development across BC. We are currently seeking an Accountant to join our property accounting and society accounting teams. The successful candidate will be a methodical, detail-oriented accounting professional who takes satisfaction in creating and maintaining strong financial reports, has an unflappable demeanor, excellent strength of character, and a dedication to “getting it right”. The Accountant will support direct processing of AR and AP, support monthly accounting for 3rd party property managed properties, and eventually take on the day-to-day property accounting responsibilities of a portfolio of properties. The accountant will also provide support to the society/corporate accounting division, particularly with project and property chargebacks.
Primarily reporting to the Manager, Property Accounting, as well as the Assistant Controller to support society accounting, your responsibilities would include:
- All aspects of property accounting Including AR/AP, banking, loan schedules, monthly reports, and GST filings as applicable. Support Improvement of policies and procedures for property accounting.
- Prepare monthly reporting packages, including comparative reports of GAAP operating results and financial position and variance explanations.
- Assist with preparation of year-end audited financial statements. Ensure systems and methods are aligned with audit requirements.
- Effectively communicating financial information to Property Managers and provide financial and analytical assistance as needed.
- Prepare monthly society/corporate accounting chargebacks to projects and properties
- Special projects as may be assigned.
Qualities
- Extremely systems-oriented – enjoys creating replicable forms and methods. Able to maintain sight of the bigger picture whilst spending time in the details.
- Highly responsive with strong communication skills, in being able to communicate and work with Slack, email, Google Chat, and by phone.
- Analytical by nature, with a strong aptitude for finance/numbers.
- Curious, with a solutions-oriented approach to problems and the ability to focus on the details while keeping an eye on the bigger picture.
- Thrives in an autonomous work environment and has the foresight to bring others in as needed.
- A team player able to work closely with other departments and external third-party property managers.
- Meticulous attention to detail and a strong commitment to accuracy.
- Flexibility and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment as well as meet all deadlines.
- Able to work independently and can thrive in a primarily work-from-home environment, with remote supervision.
Qualifications/Experience
- Work experience that demonstrates the above qualities and skills. Property Accountant, public practice, or equivalent experience would be desirable.
- CPA designation or working on their designation is an asset.
- Experience with Yardi property management software is a strong asset.
- Intermediate to advanced Excel skills.
- Experience working with other non-profits and in the affordable housing sector considered an asset.
